Arguments with Your Brothers & Sisters

Sometimes when we disagree with our friends, we can walk away and take a break so that the disagreement fades away.

When we disagree with our brothers and sisters, it is not always easy to give ourselves some space from the problem and get over it.

Disagreements always happen…when you are a kid and when you are an adult. We do need to learn how to deal with it, because it is impossible to get along with EVERYONE all the time.

The big thing to remember is that everyone deserves to feel and be safe in their own home or yard.  So if something your brother or sister is doing to you makes you feel upset or anxious or scared, you need to get a parent involved right away.

If YOU are doing something to your brother or sister that is making them feel unsafe in their home, it might be a great idea to back off and take a break.

Instead of getting angry or yelling when a sibling’s behaviour really makes you upset, try talking instead.  Tell them what they did and why it makes you angry.  “I don’t like it when you go in my room without asking” is MUCH better than screaming at them “get out!”

And respect each other’s wishes, too. If your sister told you not to go in her room without asking, then DO ask her the next time you want to borrow her crayons.

As long as there is no hitting, even brothers and sisters can learn to get along or avoid each other when they are having a bad get-along day.

Have a great summer!
