Leading the Way
You demonstrate leadership when you assist in decisions, do significant things and achieve goals for others as well as yourself. If you create a plan to achieve goals and then execute the plan…you are a leader!
Too often, the perception is that young people “need” things and don’t offer them. This fallacy can sometimes hinder the progress of young people trying to take over key leadership roles. It is only through demonstrating abilities in brainstorming, planning and idea execution that you will change perceptions.
Start with a goal. Make decisions that move the project forward in the direction of the goal. Demonstrate your interest in other’s opinions. Try to include some of them in the plan if they can assist in getting to the goal.
Every committee or council you work with will help you gain experience in decision-making and will allow you to grow in your abilities to interact with others and explore your own identity in a group role. Take on responsibilities and be accountable for things that do not turn out in the best way. In this way, you will grow into a dynamic and accomplished leader!
