What’s So Great About Glee?
Being a fan of the TV show Glee may make you a Glee Geek, known as a “Gleek”.
Set in the fictional William McKinley High School in Lima, Ohio, Glee features the show choir (modern glee club) “New Directions”. It was originally conceived as a film.
Each episode includes great cover versions of tunes that range from Broadway to Oldies to Current Chart Toppers. The songs are released on iTunes in the week of broadcast and so far have racked up well over 7 million digital sales!
The characters on the show sing the songs, but here is just a small sample of the tunes featured in Season 1, listed with the name of the original artists:
“Respect” – Aretha Franklin
“I Kissed a Girl“ – Katy Perry
“That’s the Way I Like It“ – KC and the Sunshine Band
“Viva la Vida“ – Coldplay
“Gold Digger“ – Kanye West
“Take a Bow“ – Rihanna
“Poison“ – Bell Biv Devoe
“Taking Chances“ – Celine Dion
“Don’t Stop Believin’“ – Journey
“Somebody to Love“ – Queen
“Sweet Caroline“ – Neil Diamond

“Gives You Hell“ – All American Rejects
And a whole episode was dedicated to the music of Madonna!
Plus Show Tunes from: Chicago A Chorus Line Funny Girl Hair My Fair Lady
Cabaret
West Side Story Guys and Dolls Les Miserables
And many more!
The choreographer is Zach Woodlee, and each episode features 5 to 8 production numbers. That’s why it takes about 10 days to film each episode, but the pre-production begins almost 6 weeks before filming! How much does a production like this cost? Oh, just about $3 million. PER EPISODE!
