Dangerous Driving – What Happens When You Drive Distracted So many studies again and again are proving that driving while using a cell phone to talk or text, and also using a GPS unit to find your way can be dangerous to all drivers, and especially young ones! Why? Studies find that reaction time to everything from green and red lights to brake lights on other cars is slower. Hundreds of thousands of accidents occur each year because of driving while using an electronic device, and thousands of deaths per year can be directly blamed on cell phone use! Even just the risk of having an accident at all is four times higher when you drive while using an electronic device. Some Canadian provinces have banned or are banning the use of hand-held phones, GPS devices and similar items while driving, but even hands-free devices are proving to increase risk levels. Interruptions to driving of any kind, from voice recognition interfaces to an incoming call to pushing a button to get your next map—these all add to the dangers. Experts, police and driving professionals are all encouraging drivers to be wise to the dangers and to consider new rules for driving: - Two hands on the wheel at all times
- Distractions at a minimum
- Seatbelts for all
If you make them rules to drive by, they could become the rules to live by. |
